Inverter

Inverters are essential for feeding solar power into the mains grid

The inverter is an essential component of the solar array. It converts the direct current into alternating current so that it can be fed into the grid. The inverter also makes sure that the system immediately shuts down when are faults in the grid. Inverters are also used for providing electricity in so-called island systems, i.e. in a closed power system that is not connected to the grid, such as in a caravan or in remote cabins. Here, the solar power generated is saved in banks of batteries by the inverter. When buying, always make sure that the inverter is compatible with the solar modules and the other components.

There are three basic categories of inverters. Some inverters are suitable for single-phase alternating current, others are for triple-phase rotary current. Large central inverters are of no interest for domestic use as they are intended for extremely high efficiencies, take up lots of space and are predominantly used by professional solar energy producers.

Sinus inverters should be considered for domestic use as they provide sensitive devices such as televisions and computers with reliable energy. In general, the branded products which have dominated the market include the likes of SMA inverters, Solarmax inverters, Kostal inverters, SolarEdge inverters and Kaco inverters. The cost of an inverter varies by model and intended use.

To test the performance of a solar array, you can connect a solar log; this is attached to the inverter and measures input and output performance as well as recording any faults. The results can be displayed in tables or as a graph, although an internet connection is required for this.
